That is a great point to bring up. I offer the thoughts above as general inspiration but clearly there are questions like the one you bring up where the most important thing will be working in honest good faith. I don?t know if best practices have emerged around things like that, but I am sure that your job is clearly identified as a fair game. If I cant shoot people while they are allowed to live above the law, police need to give citizens better ways to report repeat offenders. That will actually get their license taken away. Not just holding your phone up and attempting to “scare ” them by letting them know youre reporting them.

Yes, people who marry young may be generally more responsible in life and so may also be more responsible behind the wheel, but I really can’t believe that, all other factors being equal, a 40 year old who gets married magically becomes a better driver. I think factoring marital status into insurance premiums beyond a certain age is discriminatory.

People have no idea how much work it is to complete a driving complaint. They call, want to make a statement, “oh yeah I saw him speeding” or the “driving all over the road.”

All we get is a plate number and some ones word to go off. Now we have to introduce an emergency vehicle onto a freeway or highway and speed to catch up to the person putting others and ourself in increased risk of needless danger.

Then let’s say we can’t find the person. We have to investigate the plate, see who it comes back to, make sure the registered owner was the one driving it. Track down a phone number for them, they never answer, so leave a message. Call the reporting party back, ask what they saw, ask if they want to file an incident on the matter, they say yes. It is then explained to the reporting party that they may be subpoenaed to court for testimony if it’s contested, so then they say no….we inform them that we were unable to locate the vehicle but will continue to look out for it.

Finally we receive a call from dispatch saying the owner is returning our call, only we can’t take it because we’re too busy at a domestic involving weapons. So we back burn it until later… then can’t call because it’s after midnight on a weekday and we just cleared from the jail after arresting a subject from the Domestic. We call the suspect driver back tomorrow because the damn case is still pending open… only to have him say his ex wife was driving. Now we need to effing track his ex wife down…

Do you see where I’m going with this? It doesn’t seem like a big deal, but have 5,6,or 7 of those a day while you’re trying to help people with mental health issues or negotiating some one out of a bathroom who has a knife to their own neck.

Stop calling in driving complaints, you are literally making life more miserable for a lot more people than it needs to be.

Unless it’s obvious that they might be impaired and pose a greater danger to the people on the road and you’re willing to make a statement. Swallow your damn pride and accept the fact that people are going to cut you off and ride your ass.

We have real work to do, stop bothering us with this nonsense.

And the response to “you signed up for this” is No, none of us signed up to hear you complain about a driver who swerved a little and touched the fog line, or didn’t cross without using their blinker… you’re making it hard for us to do our jobs.

I was able to move over safely to about a collision. Thankfully no accident because I reacted to her reckless driving and she literally was about to hit me hard if I didn’t move . She was driving a grayish Jeep with liscense plate HUNTER.

It almost seems as if the NHTSA stopped keeping track (or were asked to by someone to stop releasing the information) after 2007 (Or hid it better since there was a mass influx of legal and illegal immigration, and probably would have giving anti-immigration advocates ammunition) But here is what is still out there.

I’m sick and tied of bad drivers speeding every day and night in hilton street east bromwich. Cars still speed when the children are playing in the street and they need to be stopped before some one gets hit by any of these cars and what should also happen is a camera and speed bumps put down that will slow them down a lot and a camera. Once caught on camera then they should take a driving test again and given a fine too.

Your math seems a few orders of magnitude off…men would be every 286,776 miles and women every 240,412 on average. But the premise is true that women would have more accidents in a given mileage…unfortunately insurance rates are based on a time period of coverage not a fixed mileage, and they do factor in that men drive more on average.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE MY GRANDPARENTS and would hate to see the same blow to her ego and self esteem I watched my grandfather suffer when he had to surrender his D.L. I am EXTREMELY concerned about them being injured or even killed by her driving or doing the same to another vehicle or family I do not want to be chastised or exiled from my family for initiating her D.L. being taken away my hope is an officer will get behind her and pull her over after he sees she cannot maintain a lane for more than several seconds as well as her ability to break; my grandfather is consistently slammed into the dashboard I am very distraught&confused as to what to do but SOMETHING MUST BE DONE TO PROTECT THEM AND SOCIETY. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE IF ANYONE HAS ADVICE AS TO HOW I CAN PROCEED WITH THIS ISSUE I WOULD LOVE ANY AND ALL INPUT!!! As most of the time I am in the vehicle the apps provided to help in this situation are used to catch drivers in front or around you not a driver you are currently in the vehicle with.

I found an adroid app on Playstore called Bad Driver that allows reporting of these occurrences. Just enter the state and license plate number and submit. I am THE passenger only, use of my cell is permitted. I truly hope something that deters this dangerous behavior is done, and soon.

All style and no substance. So what tools are left to one but the personal? At least at this point.

Comment on Is The Battle Of Autonomous Car Regulations Killing You? by Chris https://www.trafficsafetystore.com/blog/autonomous-car-regulations/#comment-66 Fri, 09 Dec 2016 03:46:56 +0000 https://www.trafficsafetystore.com/blog/?p=4394#comment-66 In reply to John Creamer.

Hey John, appreciate your thoughtful response.

I agree with you that this is an exciting moment for an autonomous car. Specifically, I am seeing a lot of pressure on both private industry for the advancement of technology, and on the other side pressure on the government to regulate that progress for public safety.

On both sides, we see a similar argument surrounding the hopes and concerns of the advancement of self-driving car technologies.

During research for a recent post we published https://www.trafficsafetystore.com/blog/autonomous-car-regulations/. I investigated both sides of the debate, and the side-effects of both arguments.

On the one hand, we see automakers and interest groups fighting for more control over the direction of technology and regulations. They say that government will only slow down the process, and we should trust them to make the “right” and “moral” choices. However, we have seen countless examples where private companies take action that hurt the end-user. Some would argue these examples are out of malicious intent, but that is another discussion.

On the other side, we see government pushing to retain regulatory control over the development and application of autonomous technologies. They argue that since policy makers are voted in, they know what the public wants and will look for their best interest. However, I think we can all agree that government can be inefficient and have examples where the government has hurt the public good.

We need a different way. The government is too slow, but private automakers are inefficient and could harm the public good. I think the best approach is what we see used with the adoption of the Internet. Sure, it’s not perfect, but it is neither a private asset or a hyper-regulated (at this moment) commodity. Since the infrastructure needed for autonomous cars is in place, the government has a little argument as to why additional taxes are required. However, in my opinion, automakers can’t be trusted to overturn investor interest/the bottom line for “the good of the public.”

Would love to hear more of what you think!

Comment on Is The Battle Of Autonomous Car Regulations Killing You? by John Creamer https://www.trafficsafetystore.com/blog/autonomous-car-regulations/#comment-65 Wed, 07 Dec 2016 11:11:47 +0000 https://www.trafficsafetystore.com/blog/?p=4394#comment-65 Thanks for a thoughtful overview of several key questions facing the deployment of automated driving technologies. With my co-author Dan Malone, I have proposed that the Department of Transportation should establish a standing national road safety forum to bring state and federal regulators together with industry and safety advocates specifically to develop technical standards for the various automated systems.

The fact is that automated systems present a large array of technical issues that need be answered in uniform ways if we are to avoid driver confusion. We standardize things like foot pedals, turn signals, or warning lights so drivers do not have to learn how to drive each car they use. It takes a couple of minutes to familiarize yourself with a rental car because all the key controls are largely where you expect them to be.

We will need a similar approach to automation so drivers will know what to expect and will not misunderstand the system capabilities, warnings, or signals.

Even at this early stage, we have already had several accidents, including one fatality, due to such confusion over what a system can do and the responsibilities of the driver even when the vehicle is in automated mode. Eventually we will get this sorted out, but whether we do this in five years or 50 will depend upon how well all the stakeholders collaborate.
